THE LIVES OF CHILDREN

In some ways, the lives of children before the Civil War were very different from what most US children experience now. There were no televisions or video games to entertain them, and they often had many chores and responsibilities at home. In other ways, children of the 1800s were much like kids today. They enjoyed playing games, and spending time outdoors and with their families.

Childhood Before the War

In the years before the Civil War, families often had many children. The more children there were in a family, the more hands there were to help. A large family was especially important for families who farmed. Both parents and children generally woke before the sun was up and got to work. Children milked cows, gathered eggs from the henhouse, and got water from the well. Older sons could help their father plow fields, while daughters often helped their mother prepare food for the day and wash clothes. Many children also went to school, while others studied at home. They made time for play, too, and would enjoy fishing, hunting, and having fun with siblings and friends.
